Coach Calipari The 2010 Kentucky Wildcats will have a different look about them as they welcome first year head coach John Calipari, as well as what is regarded as the nation’s top ranked recruiting class. In addition, UK welcomes back All-SEC junior forward Patrick Patterson, and starters Ramon Harris and Perry Stevenson from last year’s squad. Calipari brings a track record equaled by few, having led two different schools to the Final Four. The Wildcats entered the 2010 season the winningest program in Division I history with 1,988 victories.

Coach Dempsey With the return of four starters, the 2009-10 Broncs are once again expected to be one of the top teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The returnees are led by Ryan Thompson, a 6’6” senior point guard who last year ranked in the top 11 in the MAAC in eight categories, including second in scoring (18.0), seventh in assists (3.3) and 11th in rebounding (6.5). Also returning to the starting line up are 6’7” junior forward Mike Ringgold, 6’7” sophomore guard/forward Novar Gadson and 6’2” junior guard Justin Robinson. Ringgold ranked seventh in the MAAC in field goal percentage last season and was ninth in rebounding, 21st in scoring. Gadson was named the Collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Freshman of the Year for 2008-09 and was named to the Collegeinsider.com Freshman Mid-Major All-America team. Robinson moved from the point guard to shooting guard last season and led the MAAC in 3-point field goal percentage (.437). The key newcomer is 6’1” junior guard Jhamar Youngblood, a transfer from Monmouth University where he was the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year as a freshman and the Hawks’ leading scorer as a sophomore. The Broncs are led by head coach Tommy Dempsey, who compiled a program-best 58 wins over the last three seasons.

Coach Marlin During the 21st century (2000-09), the University of Texas Longhorns are the only one of the 21 NCAA Division I men’s basketball teams in Texas to win more games than Sam Houston State University. Texas has won 251 games followed by Sam Houston with 190 wins, Texas-El Paso 179, Texas Tech 177 and Texas A&M 167. In the 11 seasons since head coach Bob Marlin took over the Bearkat program, Sam Houston ranks as the Southland Conference’s “winningest” team with a 200-123 record. Seven of the last eight seasons, Sam Houston has finished among the top three teams in the Southland including a league title in 2003 and the SLC West Division championship last year. With the highest scoring back court in Bearkat history returning, Sam Houston looks to be in the SLC hunt again in 2010. Corey Allmond averaged 15.3 points and Ashton Mitchell scored 12.5 in 2008. Preston Brown (9.9 points) and Lance Pevehouse (9.1 points) also return off of last year’s squad that rolled up an 18-12 season mark.

Stanford closed out the 2008-09 campaign at 20-14 overall and 6-12 in Pac-10 play. For the 20th time in school history, the Cardinal reached the 20-win plateau. Following up on the 28-8 mark during the 2007-08 campaign, this marked the first time since 2002-03 (24-9 overall) and 2003-04 (30-2 overall) that Stanford posted back-to-back 20-win campaigns. Stanford secured a winning record for the 16th consecutive season and notched at least 18 victories for the third year in a row. The Cardinal also reached the postseason for the 16th straight year, advancing to the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI).

Coach Bennett Virginia returns 12 lettermen for the 2009-10 season. Sylven Landesberg, a 6-6 sophomore guard, and 6-8 junior forward Mike Scott lead the Cavaliers. Landesberg was the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year in 2008-09 when he led the Cavaliers in scoring with an average of 16.6 points a game and also averaged 6.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists a game. Scott averaged 10.3 points and a team-leading 7.4 rebounds a game last season. Other key returning players include senior guard Calvin Baker, sophomore guard Sammy Zeglinski, senior forward Jamil Tucker, junior guard Jeff Jones and sophomore center Assane Sene. The 2009-10 season will be the first for Tony Bennett as Virginia’s head coach.
